Understanding the Cost

Acurest’s TrueFIT Custom Mask is the only CPAP mask which is truly custom-made to fit your face. It’s made from a mould of each individual user, so it’s obviously comfortable. Acurest sells this mask with a guarantee that it will not only fit each user comfortably, but that it will seal effectively at all pressures without the need for tight head straps.

According to the literature, it is also extremely quiet, has carefully diffused exhaust ports so there’s no airflow in the bed. It’s stable, won’t leave marks on the face and works well in any sleep position and with beards and moustaches. Acurest claims that this mask is the ultimate nasal CPAP mask. Sounds great!

But it costs $1,450. Yikes!

Can a CPAP mask really be worth that much? Well maybe it can…

Let’s say that you are a pretty normal CPAP user. You probably tried five or six masks before you bought the one that you hated the least. Okay, maybe that’s too strong. You bought the mask that fit you the best (out of the ones you tried) or was the least uncomfortable.

It doesn’t matter how many masks you tried, it’s unlikely that you cried out, “Yippee, that’s the one, that’s perfect!” when you tried it on, right? But the doctor said that you had to have a mask, so you picked one.

Anyway, you own a mask. Let’s say it cost you $300.00. It’s not perfect, but it’s okay. It works pretty well and most nights you get the prescribed four hours of therapy, some nights even longer. You and your partner can tolerate the noise and airflow and some people have even said that you look younger without the beard. Anyway, your sleep is definitely better than it was with all the snoring and choking going on before treatment! But it’s still not quite normal sleep, right?

Your mask has soft silicone seals which wear out and need replacement every three to six months (cost: $75.00). The head strap also wears out every six to nine months (cost: $70) and you will probably want a spare so that you can wash the original occasionally.

The mask itself will need to be replaced (per manufacturer’s recommendation) every year. Of course, with all these trips to the CPAP supplier, you will get to see all the latest masks (new models are released every six months or so). So there will always be the opportunity to be talked in to another, new-improved, “latest-thingy”, mask.

So what is the annual cost of your mask? Let’s see:

Initial purchase price                                $300.00
Spare headstrap          $   70.00
 Replacement headstrap $   70.00
  2 x replacement seals (@ $75ea) $150.00
TOTAL ANNUAL COST: $590.00

Okay, but that’s still way cheaper than the TrueFIT Custom Mask, right? Well, it would seem so on a straight comparison. But the TrueFIT Custom Mask is made of sturdier materials and it has a normal life of three to four years.

So what is the annual cost of the TrueFIT? Let’s see:

Initial purchase price divided by three     $483.00
 Spare TrueFIT headstrap                       $  17.50
Replacement TrueFITheadstrap           $  17.50
TOTAL ANNUAL COST (3 years):             $518.00
TOTAL ANNUAL COST (4 years):             $397.50

Voila! The TrueFITCustom Mask is not more expensive when you take everything into consideration. It’s only more expensive up front. And we haven’t finished yet.

When you need a new TrueFIT Custom Mask, Acurest don’t need to re-mould your face, so the subsequent mask costs only $1,200. This reduces the cost (as calculated above) to either $435 per year over three years or $335 per year over four years based on current pricing.

Clearly then, dollar for dollar, the TrueFIT Custom Mask is a more economical option.

And while TrueFIT Custom Mask users have been saving all this money, they have also been wearing the ultimate CPAP mask for their face. It’s not a compromise which you and your partner “tolerate” for as long as possible each night. It’s guaranteed to fit comfortably without needing tight straps, it seals properly and it’s quiet.

And the economics still work out if you get longer out of your standard mask than the manufacturer says. If you get two years out of your standard mask, then the annual cost of having that mask drops to $440 per year. If you stretch things out like this then you can save a few dollars, even if the seal and mask don’t work as well as when they were new.

But the point is that for about the same money you can have all the comfort and effectiveness of a custom-made mask.

We spend about a third of our lives in bed. Getting good sleep is important to our overall health and wellbeing. Sleep is not a time to settle for a compromise. You want the best you can get.

Of course, you can continue to pay more for masks that do less….

That’s up to you. After all, it’s your sleep!
